Android Async Task JSON Feed
A json API feed example using customisable cells and an asynchronous task to fetch the json API results. I am using Twitter, but I have tested using meetup API and Guardian newspaper API.

It gets a JSON image which it converts to a BitMapFactory from the JSON URL - a two step process.
I have a simple java inner class to hold four string json-results variables.
You can add a cell back ground image and change the cell background colour in a striped presentation.

The code is short but subtitle so try not to underestimate its difficulty. The source code should run on Eclipse, Android API level 4 to 15 and displays in small screen to 7 inch. I have not tested in a 10 inch tablet yet.

Well, I hope my source code works immediately on your system - it seems robust and is OK down to sdk 1.6 (API 4) AFIK. Would love to get feedback about it on your phone. I have only tested on one (a Samsung Galaxy P1000) and emulators. But it SHOULD work on every Android IMO.

There is not much code to this tutorial but its not so easy because ListViews, ArrayAdapters need learning and experience IMHO - lots of 'gotchas'. You need to work yourself in to ListViews and the JSON simple java library. There is also a fetch thread that needs care. I could write a long blog about it all - but I figure you have to try stuff yourself. Reading helps sometimes but in this case not much because there are so many ins-and-outs.
I recommend a few days getting familiar with these table cells, ImageViews, - inflating views is also quite tricky and getView method (an ArrayAdapter method) plays a key role here.

The source code should work if you have a decent environment. Its quite strong code which is why I chose it. You can click on cells which takes you to a WebView but I was too lazy to implement a relevant URL so it just arrives to google on clicking a cell. Will update when I have written a good cell clicking routine :)

All the best with this in your Android project. Hope this source code is useful to you - at least it will get you started with ArrayAdapters and ListViews - not the easiest topic in Android development. See if you can convert it to use AsyncTask (and tell me about it please)

I am adding an audio for those that like listening to spoken words rather than reading. Sorry I could not get speech on the video - bandwidth constraints etc.

You need a single view template then add 3 more View Controllers. Add two swipe controls to each and connect each swipe control to a View Controller - one swiping right and the other swiping left. Then add ImageViews to each View Controller. Then assign your 320 by 480 image to each ImageView and your done. You can change the transition (dissolve, rotate etc) by clicking on the swipe objects then in the attribute selector which is top right (and 4th along from left).

No code needed, not a single line and you can add as many View Controllers with ImageViews as you like.

If you cannot manage all the connecting get the source code - I WILL email it to you.

Drag an image view onto a View Controller and then the swipe object. Repeat and link the two using 'push'. Press Ctrl and drag to link the swipe control to a View Controller.

Coredata is a great IOS 5 framework allowing you to store (persist as they say) data - text, numbers, latitudes, longitudes, money amounts). My tutorial get you started as painlessly as possible.

I hope to add more complicated coredata and iCloud data storage tutorials later.

Introduction

An Xcode 4.2.1 tutorial project that creates a json (twitter) feed display in iPhone / iPad using a pull down to refresh table view cell in a storyboard.

There is also an activity indicator added via code and a navigation controller with a navigation bar. You can add detail views, but this particular example does not have any.

You can use a customised cell with lots of labels and images if you like. I hope to add a video that illustrates how to do that soon.

It uses a table view controller and a navigation view controller. the detail view controller with its segue was removed, but you can put it back easily if you want.

I have arranged it to be as simple as possible. So the code to add is all in the one file called MasteViewController.m (and a small accompanying .h file). This file is already in the pre-prepared Master-Detailed-Application template offered in Xcode - you just need to amend its content.

Music 4.5, The Social Live Music Industry. Where is the money?

Taking place on Tues 13th December in Central London, this promises to be another good chance for the music industry to organise itself around the new aspects arising in this industry. There are plenty of new ideas around now and being developed by start-ups in an evolutionary process where only the fittest companies survive.

Last night (Friday Nov 11th) the Lovie Awards prize giving was held in Shoreditch London town, UK. St Lukes Church was beautifully fitted out in loving pink lights with pink hearts everywhere, hundreds of people from Europe and elsewhere attended. Love love love was the theme. All the prize winners had to include the word love in their acceptance speeches.

Internet Week at hQ - What do big companies mean for London?

We discussed links between Silicon Valley and Tech City and differences between bigger companies and start-ups. Everyone thought that there will be a lot of link-ups across the pond in the future.

London is providing a good springboard entrepreneurs and companies and the goverment's Tech City initiative they launched from Brick Lane was regarded as a bold and valuabl initiative. Even Google is opening a big center in East London soon. More will follow.

It was thought that hubs of development need not be confined to Shoreditch and surroundings because most places inn Greater London are quickly accessible. I thought of Covent Garden and W1 as great places for the more creative talent to assemble and bloom.

Internet World Keynote from Ed Vaizey & Helen Burrows

Helen Burrows - left in picture - http://www.helenburrows.com/ showed us collected evidence that the creative industries are not such an investment risk that is generally thought. Indeed, its a 6 billion pound industry no more risky than comparable sectors.

Someone from the audience said that since the government - that means we citizens - owns a large part of Royal Bank of Scotland that it should take the lead in investing about 1 billion into creative industries.
But Ed Vaizey - Minister for the creative Industries replied that the government was invested in RBS and not in a position to make direct investments to creative start-ups.
Ed also said that the best way to encourage investors was to limit their losses should a start-up fail using tax incentives.

Java Ruby Python - WOrkflows and BPEL

Java is used extensively in industry and is a fine grained language suitable for complex business processes that need to be hand written.

Python, Ruby, Groovy, Grails are scripting languages that are faster to develop and easier to debug. However they are still not used as much as Java in mainstream applications although they should be. The scripting languages can have skeleton programmes already built - for example online shops, blogs. These are then easy to get up and running but can be difficult to customize since then original code must be then written.

Workflows and BPEL is slowly gaining ground but in fact is more complicated to use than plain programming languages like java. Why? Because the idea of simple graphical drawings that run programs simply does not work. Why? A simple graphical block can certainly be drawn but then code has to be written to run it and make sure it fits with the picture drawn - usually making it even more complex than just plaion code.

Solutions? At present to use a good BPM software if posssible and large enough budget and design projects to reduce complexity of code and ensure the easy reverse engineering that inevitably is needed somewhere down the line.
